Hip or pelvis? I get a persistent burning sensation at the top of my left pelvis. It grumbles away all the time and flares every few days. Yes you can get RA there

Hi Debs

Because I suffer from Ulcerative Colitis I cannot use NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen. So my regime is Morphine Sulphate in continuous from topped up with Paracetamol and codeine, and as a last resort ora morphine. If you can tolerate them, NSAID's are better because they are anti inflammatory as well as pain killers.

... and on a purely practical front I wear loose trousers such as joggers, to avoid any pressure on the site that a tight waistband or belt would cause.

I also find it's worse at night.

Oh, and by the way, you can get pain in your hips / pelvis that is in fact referred pain from your lower back. Do you have a history of lower back pain? That too can be RA in origin.

hi Debbie,

i read an article yesterday i think it was in the Daily Mail ( read it out in a Cafe ) it was via NRAS about a lady who was 29 and suffered with her hips .. i think she had both replaced but don't quote me i just had time to skim through this, she developed RA at 16 i think from memory.

perhaps if someone from NRAS reads this post they can put the link here.

the upshot of the story was really about how much better it is today re drugs and RA, it's not such a debilitating condition if you get treated "quickly" was the key, mentioned Methotrexate and Anti-TFN.

sorry to hear you are suffering so much,

Suzanne

Hi Debs

Unfortunately R.A does attack the hips causing inflammation and damage. I have very aggressive R.A, my hips were both destroyed within 2 years of diagnosis and I ended up having them both replaced in 2002. The replacements have been fantastic and are still going strong.

You can ask for a steroid injection into the hip joint if the pain gets too hard to cope with. Do you take anti-inflammatories? Also physio exercises to help strengthen the muscles would help the pain.

Best wishes
Rebecca
